One of the most common things we hear in our office is, “I feel so much better. I guess I don’t need to come in anymore.”
First of all, that’s exactly what we want. Our goal is to help you feel better and get back to living your life.
But feeling better and being fully healed are not always the same thing.
Pain Is a Poor Progress Report
Pain is usually the last symptom to appear and often the first symptom to disappear. Your body can have underlying dysfunction long before you notice pain, and that dysfunction can still be present after your symptoms improve.
Think about spraining your ankle.
Within a few days or weeks, you may be able to walk on it with little discomfort. That does not mean the ligaments have completely healed or that your balance and stability have returned. If you immediately jump back into intense activity, you’re much more likely to reinjure it.
The same principle applies to your upper neck.
Healing Happens in Stages
When the upper cervical spine is misaligned, it can interfere with the way your brain and body communicate. At Balanced Chiropractic, we use detailed CBCT imaging and the Blair Upper Cervical Technique to precisely analyze and correct those misalignments.
After an adjustment, many patients notice changes quickly. Headaches become less frequent. Vertigo settles down. Brain fog improves. Neck pain eases.
Those improvements are exciting, but they’re only the beginning.
Your muscles have been compensating for months or even years. Ligaments have adapted to the abnormal position. Your nervous system has learned a new “normal.”
Even after the bones are corrected, your body still needs time to remodel those tissues and relearn healthier movement patterns.
Feeling Better Comes Before Stability
One of the biggest goals of care is helping your adjustment hold.
In the beginning, your body may not hold corrections very long because the muscles and ligaments have not yet adapted. As healing continues, those corrections typically last longer and require fewer adjustments.
This is why we check you rather than simply adjust you.
Some visits you may not need an adjustment at all. Other times, even if you’re feeling great, we may find that your body needs a gentle correction before symptoms ever return.
Catching small changes early often prevents larger problems later.
It’s Like Building a House
Imagine pouring the foundation for a house.
The concrete may look dry after a day or two, but no builder would immediately place the entire structure on top of it. It needs time to cure and gain strength.
Your body works the same way.
Just because the symptoms have improved does not mean your body’s foundation is fully stable.
Our Goal Is Long Term Health
At Balanced Chiropractic, we’re not interested in chasing symptoms.
We want to restore proper function so your body has the best opportunity to heal itself. That takes time, consistency, and careful monitoring.
Our advanced CBCT imaging allows us to see exactly how your upper cervical spine is positioned, and the Blair Technique allows us to make incredibly specific corrections. From there, your body does the healing.
Our job is to monitor that process and make sure you’re progressing toward lasting stability, not just temporary relief.
The Bottom Line
Feeling better is something to celebrate.
But don’t confuse feeling better with being finished healing.
The patients who experience the best long term results are often the ones who continue through the stabilization phase, allowing their body the time it needs to truly recover.
If you’ve been feeling great lately, that’s fantastic. Let’s make sure it stays that way. Call or text us at 801-477-7222.
Frequently Asked Questions
If I feel better, why do I still need chiropractic checkups?
Many people feel better before their muscles, ligaments, and nervous system have completely stabilized. Regular checkups help ensure your correction is holding and allow small issues to be addressed before symptoms return.
Why doesn’t my chiropractor adjust me every visit?
At Balanced Chiropractic, every visit begins with an evaluation. If your correction is holding well, you may not need an adjustment. The goal is to adjust only when necessary.
How long does it take to stabilize after upper cervical care?
Every patient is different. Healing depends on factors such as age, lifestyle, previous injuries, and how long the problem has existed. Many patients gradually hold their corrections longer as healing progresses.
Is maintenance care just treating symptoms?
No. Maintenance or wellness care focuses on monitoring spinal stability and nervous system function rather than waiting for pain to return.
